World Breast Cancer Research Day: August 18th

October may be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but we’re getting a head start by recognizing August 18th as World Breast Cancer Research Day.
The 18th day of the 8th month is significant: 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A breast cancer diagnosis is never good news, but thanks to relentless research, we are more equipped now than ever to fight breast cancer. For more information, visit the Tower Cancer Research Foundation site.
As with any disease, the earlier cancer is detected, the better the prognosis. Early detection starts with performing monthly self-checks, scheduling annual physicals, and having recommended mammograms. Need details about screenings & tests? Talk to your primary physician, or visit the American Cancer Society’s Recommendations page. The ACS also has a 5-minute CancerRisk360 assessment, which gives a personalized roadmap of actions with helpful resources.
On a more personal note, four women in our extended Siena Group family have been diagnosed with breast cancer – three are survivors and one was sadly lost. We can ALL do something to fight cancer: we can support those going through it, celebrate the survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and never, ever give up hope for a cure.
